Health InfoNet of Alabama is a free award-winning consumer health information service of the Alabama public and medical libraries. It began in 1999 as a local service to Jefferson County residents, expanding to Shelby County in 2002 and the whole state in 2004. In 2018 the management of Health InfoNet of Alabama was transferred from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences to the Alabama Public Library Service (APLS) in Montgomery.
A primary focus of its efforts is the collections and services of the public libraries in supporting health questions. The medical librarians’ role is to provide training for public librarians in consumer health information service provision as well as health collections consultation and backup reference service for health questions from residents. (See the Health InfoNet Resources for Librarians page for more information.)
